Write a reviewAt the time of the organic origin of our planet, ozone played an important role in nature's life cycle. In his remarkable experiments in 1953, Standley L. Miller demonstrated how amino acids are formed from methane and ammonia when subjected to an electrical discharge. Amino acids are the building blocks of all living cells and tissues. Simultaneously, during this process, electrical discharges also produce ozone. Ozone continues to play an important role in nature's life cycle today. It is formed in the upper atmosphere through high energy radiation of sunlight, breaking up the oxygen molecules. Organic and inorganic impurities which penetrate our atmosphere are destroyed by ozone during this chemical reactions. As a special form of oxygen, ozone contains three oxygen atoms. It has the highest thermodynamic oxidation potential of all oxidants widely used in water treatement, which results in a variety of effective applications. Even though the ozone molecule is small, it contains a very high energy potential. It is powerful, eager to react, fast reacting, and generates results as soon as it combines with a compatible reaction component. Under certain conditions OH-radicals, as a by-product of ozonation, are forming the most reactive and intermediate products known to science. One of the most important characteristics of ozone is its beneficial impact on the environment. In all applications to date, there have been no damaging effects to systems or the environment, nor have any toxic by-products been formed. To the contrary, during ozonation with organics, oxygen and its components are being formed, which are biodegradable. Ozonation achieves a high degree of economic efficiency, since it is produced on site, and only in the amount needed; therefore, hazardous transporation and storage are not required. Hence, ozone technology has proven itself to be the preferred technological method of water treatment for the future of our environment.
